YM-53601 inhibits squalene synthetase activity in rat hepatic microsomes and human HepG2 cells. YM-53601 can also inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis (ED|50|= 32 mg/kg), causing a reduction in both cholesterol and triglyceride levels in plasma. The lipid-lowering properties of compounds such as YM-53601 make them interesting research opportunities for alternatives to combination HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor/fibrate therapy.
