Animal studies demonstrate that proanthocyanidins reduce the plasma levels of atherogenic apolipoprotein B-triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and LDL-cholesterol but increase antiatherogenic HDL-cholesterol. Proanthocyanidins are thought to be poorly absorbable and highly metabolized by gut microflora before absorption.
