Membranes play a crucial role in cells by enclosing specific compartments and regulating the entry and exit of metabolites and other crucial components in and out of a cell.  They also play a key role in signaling from plasma membrane receptors to the cell nucleus.     The key constituents of cellular membranes are lipids and fatty acids.  This kit involves the extraction of fatty acids and lipids as liposomes from a biological sample and their resolution by thin layer chromatography (TLC).   Students will also understand the role of liposomes and their potential use of drug entrapment and delivery by viewing liposomes under a microscope.    Supplied with components needed for hands-on experimentation for six workstations of 4-5 students or 24-30 students.
