For growth of established cells, primary cell cultures and cells with low plating efficiency. A neutral, highly branched, hydrophilic polymer of sucrose. Used as supplements in chemically defined media, often in conjunction with serum-derived growth factors. FicollTM is synthesized by cross-linking sucrose with epichlorohydrin which results in a highly branched structure. FicollTM is a neutral polymer and readily dissolves in aqueous media. Solutions containing up to 50% w/w can be prepared. Although stable in neutral and alkaline solutions, care should be taken in acid solution, especially at elevated temperatures. Pharmaceutical grade (PM) fulfills higher demands as regards purity and hygiene (e.g. bacterial contamination).
